Pratyush, the center for welfare of the downtrodden children and women, is situated 2 km. (approx.) away from Barasat town. The Center primarily deals with economic, educational, social, health and hygienic welfare of the uncared poor children and their mothers. This NEWS LETTER portrays a brief description of the activities of Pratyush. Hope, the readers (well-wishers and experts in various areas) will send their opinion to make this endeavor successful.

Annual prize distribution program: It was an important joyful day of the children and their mothers. Sixty-seven children and six mothers received prizes form distinguish guests in the Annual prize distribution programme held at Purba Barasat Adarsha Vidyapith auditorium on 26th April 2009. Children got prizes for their excellent performances in the cultural competition, football tournament (for Boys) and Talpata Kaguji (for Girls) and their mothers in the handicraft competition. Sri Ratantanu Ghati (renowned child litterateur), Sri Ashok Ghosh (Director, Vikas Kendra, Atghora), Dr. Jharna Chattopadhyay (renowned physician), Smt. Laxmi Chakraborty (President, Headmistress), Tanmoy Roychowdhury and Shankar Tafadar (Painter) were among the distinguished guests. Children presented drama ‘Pandit moshai’, songs, recitations and dances after the prize giving ceremony was over. Big Chocolates, biscuits and sweets were distributed among the children.

New class & upcoming tasks: After completion of the annual examination children went to their close relatives’ house and returned with full of joy. Meanwhile, results have been declared and except one (mariginally retarted boy) all of the children of Pratyush got promotion to the new classes. This year five children got chance for admission in the class V at two schools namely, Kazipara Hazarat Ekdilsha higher secondary school and Barasat Vivekanda Adarsha Vidyapith. Chiranjeet, Partha and Mita were admitted in the Barasat college and Barasat Govt. college respectively. Sonali and Hossain successfully passed the Madhyamik examinations and got admission to class XI.

Acting potentiality competition: Acting potentiality competition of the children was successfully completed and Annual Cultural Festival will be held on 9th May (Birthday of Rabindranath Thakur). There were six drama groups formed among the children of Pratyush. They themselves selected the director of the drama and characters independently. Duration of each drama was 25 minutes. The five dramas were, 1. Bahurupi, 2. Chokhe angul dada, 3. Ebar ki hobe, 4. Waiting room and 5. Hing Ting chot. Results of the drama are as follows:

Best actor : Sk. Abdul Momin
Best actress : Mita Das

Bengali New Year: Pratyush organized a function by the children to celebrate Bengali New Year on 14th. April. A beautiful cultural programme was presented in that occasion. Sweets were distributed among the children, guests and members of Pratyush.

Annual Cultural Festival: Pratyush had its Annual Cultural Festival 2009 in the evening of 31st May at Rabindra Bhavan, Barasat. Children of Pratyush presented dance, recitation, bratachari, coral songs and drama (Grandma & her Jhuli). It was attended by all the children and their family members, neighbors and honorable guests besides the members and well-wishers of Pratyush. Pratyush started its journey way back in 1999 and this was its 9th. Annual Cultural Festival. This year, our honorable guests were Padmasree Niranjan Goswami (Director, Indian Mime Theater), Sri Bhabaniprasad Majumdar (renowned poet), Dr. Baidyanath Mukherjee (renowned social worker & Physician) and Dr. Tapan Biswas (President, IMA, Barasat Branch). Dr. (Mrs) Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, MP, Government of India, sent a message mentioning her inability to attend and wishing success of the programme. Dr. (Mrs.) Indrani Chakraborty was not able to attend the programme due to sudden illness of her son. Pratyush also published a special issue of its tri-monthly magazine "Bhorai" on this occasion. A stall was set up by the handicrafts wing ("Ushashi") to showcase and sell different products produced by the mothers and elderly ladies associated with Pratyush. Lots of people were not able to observe the beautiful programme due to continuous rain on that day. Still the audience, who observed the programme, opined that the programme was really unparallel.

New Executive Committee: Annual General Meeting of Pratyush was held on 21st June 2009 and the new executive committee has been formed. Newly selected members are Dr. Aniruddha Chakraborty (Secretary), Nikhilesh Sengupta (President), Anu Sarkar (Vice. President), Indra Nath Banerjee (Asst. Secretary) and Indra Kumar Sarkar (Treasurer). The elected members of the Executive committee are Rasheda Abedin, Soma Bibi, Tirthankar Ghosh, Pareshlal Karmakar, Kazi Abdul Azim, Kazi Abdul Qaium, Kalyani Das & Laxmi Biswas.

Health News: Presently two of the parents of members of Pratyush, namely Salema Bibi and Susanta Adhikary, have been receiving long term treatment from Pratyush for Kidney stone and Gastrointestinal disorder respectively. Among the children of Pratyush, it has been observed that fever, eruption on skin, diarrhea and dental ailment are the main health problems during this period.

Doctors Assistance: Dr. Ashok Mukhopadhyay has been taking care of the day-to-day medical treatment of the children and parents of Pratyush. Generally he also supplied medicines along with medical prescriptions. Besides, other doctors, namely Dr. Baidyanath Mukherjee, Dr. Jharna Chatterjee, Dr. Ashim Munshi and Doctors of Barasat Govt. hospital extended help and cooperation for the medical treatment of the ailments of the children of Pratyush and their family members.

Children Film Show Organized: Children film show was organized at the temporary campus of Pratyush. Rupkothar golpo, Batul the great, Handa Bhodar kandokarkhana, Gorzila movie were shown during this period

Monthly Guardian Meeting: As per schedule, monthly guardian meetings were held on 5.4.’09, 10.5.’09 and 7.6.’09. A new committee of the guardians has been formed and Santosh Saha (a guardian and member of Pratyush) has been elected as the coordinator of the committee.

Pratyush Bhaban Construction: After a gap of two years the roof of Pratyush Bhaban has been completed. Many of the well wishers and friends came forward for construction of roof. We are expressing our heartfelt gratitude to the well wishers and friends. We had to take a loan of rupees one lakh only from a well wisher for the completion of the roof. We hope that this amount can be collected from the well wishers who have not yet contributed towards completion of the roof.

Visitors at PRATYUSH

MANASI has been providing hope and encouragement among the economically and socially downtrodden children and those people who need care and protection. MANASI visited Pratyush in the month of April. They spent almost the whole day with the children and members of Pratyush and enjoyed songs, recitation, dance and a portion of drama presented by children of Pratyush. MANASI brought foods, used garments and funds for the children. Names of the members of MANASI and other individuals who have visited Pratyush during this period are as follows :
