Debasree was born in Kolkata. She first appeared in film as a child actor in the movie 'Balak Gadadhar' in 1969. She also acted in the role of a little girl in the  film 'Kuheli'. From the childhood, she was used to do dance performance on stage.

She first acted as a heroine in the film 'Nadi Theke Sagare' released in 1978. Since then Debasree has acted in many films in lead roles. In 1981, she acted in the Aparna Sen's first film '36 Chowrangee Lane' which was well acclaimed. In 1996, she won the national award for best actress for her role in Rituparno Ghosh's film 'Unishe April'.
